The Byshek Plane Trees

The Byshek Plane Trees are among the natural treasures of the Shushica area near Elbasan, where nature offers a lush green landscape and cool shade beneath centuries-old plane trees. This group of trees covers an area of approximately 0.4 hectares, with individual trees reaching impressive heights and massive trunk diameters, testifying to centuries of existence deeply rooted in the region’s natural history.

Natural water springs flow near the plane trees, attracting visitors and residents seeking refreshment during the summer months and providing a picturesque setting for leisure and picnics. The landscape of the Shkumbin River valley, with cold waters emerging from karst springs and the shade of towering trees, makes this area a beloved place for relaxation and connection with nature. Traditionally known as Byshek, it has long been regarded as a resting place beneath trees and flowing waters.

Despite their high biological, aesthetic, and recreational value, the plane trees have been affected by natural factors such as age and fires, which have damaged some of the trunks and impacted their overall condition. Nevertheless, Byshek remains a cherished destination for the residents of Elbasan and for visitors alike—a natural retreat where the coolness of the springs and the centuries-old shade of the plane trees create a peaceful escape from the city’s noise, while hospitality and nature continue to define the unique character of this landscape.
