The Clock Tower, one of Elbasan’s most characteristic monuments, stands near the King’s Mosque within Elbasan Castle. Originally built in the late 18th century, it served as a public timekeeping instrument intended to regulate the religious and social life of the Muslim community.
The structure is built of dressed stone and brick, with a square base that narrows toward the top, where the clock mechanism and bell tower are located. At the summit stands a metal dome that once housed the original bell, which signaled important moments of the day, such as prayer times and public activities.
According to archival records, the first clock was installed in 1899. Since then, several restorations and technical interventions have been carried out, always preserving its symbolic and practical function in the life of the city.
After suffering damage during the 20th century, the tower was restored in the early 2000s, maintaining its original architectural elements while incorporating a new clock mechanism.
